Are you in a cozy fall mood yet? We’ve had a pretty warm September here in Kentucky, but we’re beginning to see subtle shifts to fall color outdoors even with daily temps in the 80s.
I’m noticing hints of muted orange, brown, gold, and burgundy starting to appear in the mostly green foliage. The hydrangeas have turned, and I’ve harvested most of our blooms to dry for fall and winter.
Over the past couple of weeks, I’ve been slowly adding touches of fall inside our home, but with fall officially kicking off this week, I wanted to take you on a little tour to share my approach to fall decorating this year.
I’m all about creating a cozy and inviting fall mood in our home. For me, that means bringing in warmth and depth with comfy throw pillows in a soft muted fall color palette, creating a soft warm glow with candlelight and lovely fall scents, and adding touches of nature around our home — making everything feel warm and inviting as the temperatures begin to cool down.
I want our home to feel like it’s giving you a gentle, warm hug when you walk in—not overwhelming, but comforting. So today, I’m excited to share some simple ways I’ve added those cozy fall touches around our home.
A Touch of Fall in Our Entryway:
While I am still holding off on purchasing fall mums for our porch, I did, however hang a pinecone wreath with a pretty orange velvet ribbon on our front door to greet our guests.
I can’t wait to add fall blooms to our front porch, but it’s still a little warm, and I’m trying to exercise patience to get the most out of my mums this year. I’m looking ahead to next week’s weather and they’ll probably make an appearance soon.
I made a few simple changes to the decor on our foyer table for fall. I had an abundance of hydrangea blooms from our yard this year, and dried some in this white ceramic vase. For a little fall twist, I added a few random wheat stems for a little extra texture. I found the cutest glass taper candleholders from Target this year and added some battery powered flameless candles.
I didn’t change out the artwork, but I did update the wooden frame with a little Rub ‘n’ Buff for an antique gold finish. A couple of decoupaged pumpkins add the finishing touch. You can see how to decoupage pumpkins in this post.
Decorating Our Living Room for Fall
I really wanted to lean into my blue and green color palette this year, with a few subtle nods to fall color in fall stems, textures, and throw pillows.
Bronze throw pillows, and a green plaid throw add a touch of fall to the blue and white pillow scape on our living room sofas. I’m loving the new blue and white Chinoiserie toile pillows I made this year!
Our new sisal area rug adds wonderful texture to our living room, which is perfect for fall.
Our coffee table is styled with blue and white ginger jars on stacks of design books, and an oversized woven basket bowl full of moss balls and a giant hurricane candle holder. It’s a great classic look that works from season to season.
I love using fall stems in subtle shades to create a pretty fall look in our home. I love to make my arrangements feel like I’ve foraged and gathered from our yard — even if I’m using faux stems!
I combined some great faux greenery pieces with dried hydrangeas from our yard in a large wooden urn on our sofa table.
I filled a large rustic urn with more faux fall stems and placed it on our hearth to pair with the arrangement on the mantel. You can see how I created this DIY Pottery Barn look with an upcycled vase in this post.
And speaking of DIY look-alikes — I filled this Anthropologie-style DIY vase with faux fall stems in shades of burgundy, gold, and green, and added gorgeous dried hydrangeas from our yard for subtle fall color on our mantel. Three candles in gold taper holders balance out the look on this simply styled fall mantel.
Touches of Fall in Our Dining Room:
In the dining room, I kept things simple and focused on a few fall accents that complement the existing blue and white color scheme. I created a fall focal point on the table with a simple arrangement of faux fall stems in autumn hues of yellow and soft orange. To add a bit of texture, I included small vases of dried hydrangeas from our yard, which blend beautifully with the fall stems.
I gathered it all together on a colorful vintage tole painted tray, and added these DIY rose gold leaf votives for a pretty autumn glow.
I added some new lumbar throw pillows to the additional side chairs in the room to add pretty fall colors in muted shades. I’m loving these ruffled soft green lumbar pillows and this fun gold stripe pillow.
Just a few simple thoughtful fall touches can create a welcoming place to gather for fall meals.
Fall Decor Ideas in the Kitchen:
Creating a fall mood is all about warmth and comfort, and It’s always fun to add a little bit of autumn to our kitchen.
Keeping it casual and inviting is the key to great kitchen decor, and I made the easiest fall arrangement for our kitchen table with these Hearth and Hand faux seeded willow stems and faux nandina stems in a blue ceramic vase. A simple round woven tray anchors the centerpiece.
I found the cutest twisted candles at Target in Bullseye’s Playground, of all places. These little candles come in sets of two. I purchased two different shades of green. I should run out and buy some more to keep on hand all season long as I burn through them!
Keeping with my simple decorating plan of adding a few fall touches to our existing decor, I added some fall berry stems to these DIY topiaries that I created this summer. I love the orange berries in the blue and white pots! A trio of pumpkins in muted shades of oranges adds a nice fall touch to the buffet.
One handy tip when creating vignettes around your home — use pedestals to vary the height of items in your arrangements and add interest.
I thrifted the artwork in this photo several months ago from Goodwill, but had never used it. I decided fall was the perfect time to incorporate it into our kitchen decor.
And this little pear still life was a fun find on sale at Hobby Lobby, so I added it to the breakfast area. I love the rich fall shades in the artwork. I’m on the lookout for a pretty plate or platter to hang below it!
Our little hallway between the kitchen and garage needed a little happy touch of fall, and I filled a flower bucket full of faux magnolia stems, fall berries, dried hydrangeas, and these faux pomegranate stems. A little gold velvet ribbon adds the finishing touch.
Our sink area got a little mini fall makeover! I had so much fun making topiaries last summer that I decided to add another one to this area, and of course, had to add some velvet ribbon. My new topiary is styled on this pretty marble tray from Target.
I added some fresh new towels in a basket beside the sink and found these cute soap and lotion dispensers to elevate the look. I think the labels are so pretty! The bottles are sitting on this little water absorbent stone tray.
Now our home feels ready for us to settle in and enjoy a cozy fall season.
These simple fall decor touches have helped create a warm, inviting atmosphere in our home. I hope this little tour has sparked some inspiration for your own fall decor, making your space feel just as cozy and welcoming for the season ahead.
