I love finding creative ways to decorate our home without spending a lot of money, and today’s DIY project is a perfect example of that!
I love the look of vintage-inspired artwork as well as detailed patterns and prints, so I decided to combine these two things and create my own framed butterfly prints—and I’m excited to share them with you today! This vintage look is especially popular right now and works beautifully in a variety of home decor styles—from trending traditional and grandmillennial looks to collected, eclectic spaces.

What are Scientific Illustrations?
If you’ve ever flipped through an old nature book or seen vintage botanical prints, you’ve probably come across scientific illustrations. These are those beautifully detailed drawings of plants, insects, and animals—carefully labeled and sketched with precision, almost like a mix between art and science. They were originally used to document species before photography, but today, they make for gorgeous decor!
I decided to try my hand at creating some digital art prints that mimic this vintage art look, and paired them with beautiful patterned borders and backgrounds to create a classic look.

I had so much fun designing this set of printable artwork! I wanted to create something with a vintage feel while also incorporating the colors and patterns I love. As you can imagine, there’s plenty of blue and green, with touches of blush and copper for warmth.
I carefully chose colors that work well together, so you can easily mix and match these prints if you want to create a collage. You might also notice a couple of repeated butterflies—I just couldn’t decide which version I liked best, so I included both in case you have a favorite!
These are 5×7 prints because I wanted a smaller size to frame and display around the house. To access the PDF printables, simply fill out the form below, and they’ll be delivered straight to your inbox!

How to Print and Frame Your Butterfly Art
Once you download the printables to your computer, you have two options for printing: at home or through a print service. While you can absolutely print these on your home printer, I recommend using a professional printing service for the best quality, especially since these designs have rich, ink-heavy colors. I usually send mine to Staples, and I’ve always been pleased with the results.
For paper choice, you can use regular printer paper, but if you prefer a sturdier feel, card stock is a great option.

For framing, I used inexpensive 5×7 wood frames from Target. They originally had a natural finish, but I wanted a more elevated look, so I brushed on a little Antique Gold Rub ‘n Buff for a beautiful metallic touch. A quick and easy DIY upgrade!

Ways to Style These Butterfly Prints in Your Home
There are so many ways to decorate with these small prints! You can create a gallery-style collage on your wall by grouping multiple prints together, or keep it simple by framing a single piece for a classic touch.

These vintage-inspired butterfly prints look beautiful framed on a bookshelf or buffet, adding a bit of collected charm. I placed one in a thrifted burlwood frame on our mantel, and I love how it blends with the warm wood tones.

One of my favorite looks — adding a pair of prints above our kitchen countertops. They look so pretty styled with a topiary and a petite blue lamp.
There are endless ways to incorporate this printable artwork into your decor to add a classic, vintage-inspired feel to your space. I hope you enjoy these vintage-inspired butterfly prints as much as I enjoyed creating them!
