Hydrangeas are my very favorite flowers to grow! It’s such a treat to see the little buds start to open in the early summer and give way to large lacy blooms in shades of pink, green, blue, and white!

But one of my favorite things about hydrangeas is the stunning transformation they undergo as summer winds down.

As the summer season progresses, these blooms take on the most beautiful muted shades of deep purples, dusty pinks, and soft greens! I love how these colors develop over time to paint a beautiful garden masterpiece!

And that’s when the indoor decorating magic starts to happen!

Now that August has arrived, and summer is beginning to wind down, it’s time to start shifting my home decor a bit, even if I’m not fully ready to give up on summer and dive straight into fall!

So, this month I’ve decided to let the colors of my August garden drive my decorating — and what better place to look than to my hydrangeas to transition our decor from summer to fall!

Creating Our Home’s Late Summer Color Palette:

Hydrangeas are the perfect source of late summer color inspiration for your home!

Hydrangea blooms offer a gorgeous array of beautiful colors as they transition from their bright and vibrant shades of early summer to softer and more muted tones as summer progresses. Their blooms change to muted pinks, warm purples, soft greens, shades of blue, and soft whites and cream. These soft muted shades are a perfect bridge from summer into fall for our indoor color scheme.

This year the shades of our late summer hydrangeas range from soft muted pinks and purples to shades of green.

In the past, I’ve had more blue hydrangea blooms, but the acidity of the soil is what determines the colors, and this year my Endless Summer hydrangeas were vibrant pink for most of the summer instead of blue.

We also have a beautiful Annabelle hydrangea near our front door with gigantic blooms that transition from lovely white to soft green by the end of summer.

I love how these pink, purple, and green hydrangea colors work with our home’s blue and white color scheme to warm up our space! These colors blend seamlessly with the blues and whites in our area rug and throw pillows, and create a fresh and vibrant vibe that’s just right for the transition from summer to fall.

Hydrangea-Inspired End-of-Summer Decorating Ideas:

Here’s a peek at how I’m using these beautiful shades in our living and dining rooms as summer fades into fall.

A cozy living room with a beige sofa adorned with various patterned and colored pillows. A table in front of the sofa holds a decorative basket with greenery and candles. The wall behind features a large abstract painting, lanterns, and additional decor that showcases end of summer decorating ideas.

Living Room Decor:

It’s all about new throw pillows in the living room. (Please act surprised!)

A beige couch adorned with decorative pillows, including a ruffled sage green one, a large patterned blue pillow, and a magenta pillow. Behind the couch are two wooden lanterns with metal tops. An ornate blue and white jar sits on a nearby table. Perfect for end-of-summer decorating!

In the living room, I’ve added some new throw pillows in shades of muted green and deep rose to complement my collection of blue and white pillows on our sofas.

I found these cute ruffled vintage-look green lumbar pillows! They’re sold in sets of two and come in a variety of colors, but I chose this olive green option with a pretty muted blue ruffle.

I also added this set of deep rose flanged pillows to our sofas to coordinate with the deep purple/magenta colors in the hydrangea blooms. They also have a similar vintage vibe like the ruffled green pillows.

I tossed a green knit throw blanket over the sofa for a cozy, layered look.

Behind the sofa on the sofa table, I added a few dried hydrangea blooms to the faux greenery and cosmos arrangement to add texture and interest and add late summer color to the room.

A floral arrangement in a terra cotta pot features green leaves, white flowers, and pink-tinged hydrangeas, perfect for end-of-summer decorating. Behind it, there is a wooden lantern with a metal top and a textured blue and green painting on a white wall.

These are the greenery stems I’m using. I’ve combined these greenery stems with these faux cosmos stems in our wooden vase all summer long. Since I’m drying the hydrangea blooms, I just added them in among the greenery stems without worrying about keeping them in water.

Dining Room and Table Settings:

For the dining room, I created a centerpiece using hydrangeas that I cut from our yard for drying, and added some dahlias and greenery from Trader Joe’s. These gorgeous dahlias come in shades of blush pink and deep burgundy, which look stunning with the soft pink and green hydrangeas.

A dining table, perfect for end-of-summer decorating, is adorned with a floral centerpiece featuring green hydrangeas, deep burgundy dahlias, and pink flowers. The table is set with amber-colored glassware, white plates, and woven placemats. Peaches and green pears are scattered decoratively to brighten up your space.

The hydrangeas will dry naturally in the arrangement, adding lasting beauty for the fall and winter seasons, while the dahlias and greenery need to remain in water in the vase.

I made one large center arrangement and added two smaller arrangements in bud vases with dahlias and greenery. I’m using a jute table runner down the center of the table, and I sprinkled in some fresh peaches and pears along the tablescape for pops of late summer of color. It’s a simple way to incorporate seasonal fruits and add a bit of natural elegance to the tablescape.

A decorated dining table featuring a green and beige checkered table runner, hydrangea-inspired colors in fresh flowers and fruits, white plates on wicker placemats, green patterned napkins with silver cutlery, amber glasses, and a gold candlestick with a pink candle—perfect to brighten up your space.

I just purchased these new green block print cloth napkins to use at each place setting. They are so pretty, and I’m so pleased with the purchase. They’re the perfect shade of green, and the touches of navy look so pretty with our blue and white area rug!

The table setting includes woven placemats, white plates, amber goblets, and patterned napkins. Two red candles in elegant holders are lit at each end of the table.

Tall muted rose taper candles in gold candleholders add warmth to the room and are a beautiful addition to this late summer color palette.

I hope these ideas inspire you to explore the possibilities of using hydrangea colors in your own home as summer fades into fall. Whether you’re adding new throw pillows, creating stunning floral arrangements, or simply enjoying the natural beauty of your garden, there’s no shortage of ways to make your decor feel fresh and new.
