This week I’ve been doing a little wall art updating in our home. After I created this pair of framed Intaglio art for our dining room wall, I was inspired to update the other art as well.
As I looked around our dining room walls, all of the art sets were getting a little too matchy-matchy. We have a trio of framed art by a Nashville artist on one wall, a pair of framed Intaglios on another, and another matching pair of framed fabric art on another wall. All of the matching sets were just too much!
So, I decided to change things up with a trip to the thrift store for an inexpensive frame and some free public domain printable downloads, and now I have a much more collected look in our dining room.

Why I Chose Classic Fine Art Prints for Our Walls
I’ve always loved the timeless look of classic artwork. Lately, I’ve been especially drawn to pieces with a rich, moody feel that add depth and warmth to a space, which feels just right as we head into fall and the winter months.
The wonderful thing about open access public domain art is that it’s free to download and use. Museums such as The Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Art Institute of Chicago, and The National Gallery of Art have made thousands of fine art prints available online. You could easily spend hours browsing through their collections, but I’ve gathered some of my favorites here in this post to make it simple for you.

I chose to download and print this Sunflowers oil sketch by Vincent Van Gogh to pay with one of the existing framed blue and white fabric pieces.
With thousands upon thousands of pieces of art to choose from, it was difficult to decide what I wanted to use, but I really like this Van Gogh piece paired with one of the fabric prints.

Landscapes are my favorite, and I selected this art print to hang in our kitchen.

I’m always drawn to landscapes, and there are several landscapes to choose from in this collection, along with several fall still life pieces. You can mix and match for a gallery wall look, or simply print what you want for a cozy spot in your home.

How to Print and Size Artwork for Your Space
You can download each fine art print in three standard sizes: 11×14, 8×10, and 5×7. Just choose the size that works best for your frame and print it out. This makes it easy to add the artwork to your home without any extra resizing or editing.
I usually send all of my artwork files to Staples for printing. It’s an easy way to get high-quality prints while saving on printer ink at home. If you prefer, you can also print these on your own home printer. Just be sure to use good-quality paper for the best results.
TIP: I always choose matte paper for art prints to give a more authentic fine art look than glossy.

Budget-Friendly Frame Makeover
A thrift store is a great place to find inexpensive frames to repurpose for artwork. I always look for frames with good mats because they instantly give the prints a more finished look. For this project, I wanted frames with a little vintage character, so I chose two large frames and updated them with Rub ’n Buff for an antique gold finish.

Here’s how I gave them a quick makeover:
- Clean the frames well. Wipe away any dust or dirt so the finish will adhere properly.

- Apply Rub ’n Buff. For the darker frame, I used Antique Gold Rub ’n Buff with a light touch, applying it with my finger. (Tip: wear a glove unless you want a gold finger!) I let some of the dark color show through for depth. On the smaller frame, I first brushed on a bit of dark brown paint to tone down the shinier areas, then lightly applied Rub ’n Buff with my fingertip. Allow everything to dry thoroughly.
- Disassemble the frames. Remove the mats and any artwork. One of my frames had art inside, the other was empty.
- Prepare the backing. Mount your print to a sturdy backing board. I used what came with my frames. For the one that had artwork, I simply flipped the board over and used the back.

- Attach the print. Apply a thin coat of photo mount spray to the back of the print, let it sit for a minute until tacky, then carefully press it onto the backing. Use a small brayer to smooth it out and secure it in place.
- Reassemble. Place the mat back over your artwork, reassemble the frame, and your new piece is ready to hang.

Styling the Art in Our Home
In the dining room, I hung the large Van Gogh piece above one of our framed fabric art pieces. I love how it plays off the mirror nearby and ties in with the framed intaglios on the adjacent wall, giving the whole space more of a layered gallery look.

The smaller landscape print ended up in our kitchen, above our pear still life. I love the cozy, collected feel it brings to the room, and the way the two pieces work together adds so much character to the space.

When it comes to styling artwork, it doesn’t need to be a perfect match. Combining different subjects, frame finishes, and textures creates a layered look that feels timeless and personal, as if it’s been gathered and curated over time.

Adding classic fine art prints to your home is such an easy and affordable way to bring beauty and history into your everyday spaces. I hope these free downloads inspire you to create your own timeless look, whether it’s a single statement piece or a gallery wall that tells a story.
I hope you enjoy your new art! Let me know in the comments if you use any of these pieces in your home!
Happy Decorating,
